The multipacks represent excellent value. If you are an experienced vaper, you will know what you are looking for. However, if you are new to vaping, you might be finding the finer points of coils a little confusing.

What is a vape coil?

Every vaping device features a coil whether it is a vape pen, box mod, or pod system. Coils heat up eliquid when you press the fire button and vaporize it for you to inhale. Coils are constructed from coiled wire or a mesh and feature wicking material to soak up the eliquid. There are many different types and gauges of wire used, and the nature of the wire dictates the resistance of the coil. This is measured in ohms. The lower the resistance of the coil, the hotter it gets and the greater the vapor it produces.

What types of coil are available?

The nature of your coil will impact both your flavor and vapor production. There are a variety of coils available for some electronic cigarettes. It is worth acquainting yourself with your choices. You will then be able to identify the coils which are most likely to deliver the vaping experience you are looking for.

What types of wicking are available?

All coils, including those for refillable pods, feature wicking material to soak up the eliquid. Traditionally, that material has been organic cotton as cotton wicks readily absorb eliquid and do not impact eliquid flavor. Porous ceramic material is used in some vape coils including Vaporesso CCELL coils. Ceramic coils are also available for the Aspire AVP pods and the Innokin I.O. kit. Ceramic wicks are extremely long-lasting as they do not burn and deliver clean flavor. Some manufacturers are now offering coils with hemp or wood pulp wicking. The jury is out as to whether these materials offer any significant benefits.

What are sub ohm coils?

Electrical resistance is measured in ohms. Coils with resistances of less than 1.0ohm are known as sub ohm. The lower the resistance of the coil, the hotter it gets and the greater the vapor produced. Sub ohm coils deliver warmer vapes. They drain your battery quickly because they require more power to heat them and they use up a greater volume of eliquid. Sub ohm coils require e liquid which is at least 60%VG. If you wish to vape all day, higher resistance coils will save you money.

What are MTL coils and DTL coils?

Mouth to lung (MTL) vaping is the practice of drawing vapor into your mouth and then into your lungs as you would when smoking. Direct to lung (DTL) vaping involves drawing vapor directly into your lungs. Most vapers begin their journeys with MTL vaping to enjoy the throat hits and higher nicotine strengths that they crave. DTL vaping requires low resistance, sub ohm coils which produce bigger clouds. The more vapor you inhale, the more nicotine you absorb and so high VG e liquids for sub ohm tanks are available in lower nicotine strengths.

How often should you replace your vape coils?

Vape coils don’t last forever, whatever material they are made from. The more you vape, the more frequently you will need to change your coils. High VG juice will cause coils and wicking material to burn out more quickly than high PG eliquids due to its thicker consistency. Sweet flavors also decrease coil life as do high temperatures. If you are a heavy vaper, you will need to change your coils weekly. If you only a light vaper, your coils may last a month and more. When your quality of flavor deteriorates or you detect a burnt taste, it's time to replace your coils.

How do you choose the right coil?

If your ecig is a simple vape pen, you might find that only one type of coil is available for your device. In that case, you need only ensure that you have selected compatible coils. The packaging and product listings of replacement coils will identify the devices with which they are compatible.
